RARE ABBA INTERVIEW: Band members on songs, Mamma Mia and world tour | 7NEWS Spotlight

The Unstoppable Rise to Global Fame

By 1977, ABBA had become a global sensation, with their music, particularly “Dancing Queen,” captivating audiences of all ages worldwide. The members — Frida, Benny, Björn, and Agnetha — express profound humility and gratitude for their immense popularity, admitting they still can’t fully explain its success beyond intuition and millions sharing their musical taste.

Their creative process often involved retreats to a hut on the tiny island of Vixxa in Stockholm’s archipelago, where Benny and Björn would meticulously craft songs, often in “bits and pieces” that eventually clicked together.

From Solo Careers to Eurovision Glory

Before ABBA, Agnetha and Frida had established solo careers in Sweden. Björn met Agnetha on a TV special, and they quickly became a couple, eventually marrying in 1971. Frida caught the eye of Benny, and they too began dating, later marrying. Initially, the idea of the four forming a group didn’t occur to them until a spontaneous performance during a “free holiday” in Cyprus in 1970. Their first professional group appearance was in November 1970 as “Fest Folk,” a cabaret act which Björn jokingly calls the “low ebb” of their collaboration due to its embarrassing nature. This experience led them to realize they should focus on their original songs.

Changing their name to ABBA, their first major hit in Europe was “Ring Ring,” notable for its layered production techniques. Their defining moment came with their victory at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with “Waterloo.” Despite initial struggles to break into the market afterward, the global success of “Dancing Queen” cemented their status. The song, inspired by an “ordinary girl” who only truly lives when dancing in the disco, gave the band “goosebumps” during recording, signaling its massive potential.

The Demands of Stardom and Personal Turmoil

ABBA’s success was amplified by the dynamics of the two married couples performing together and their iconic, often uncomfortable, costumes. While they owned the stage, the members preferred writing and recording in Sweden, finding the relentless touring exhausting and creatively draining. Agnetha, who sang “Thank You for the Music” while heavily pregnant and even reclining due to doctor’s orders, later prioritized motherhood, which led to less touring.

Despite their continued musical success, the pressures of fame took a toll on their personal lives. Both marriages ended in divorce (Björn and Agnetha in 1979, Benny and Frida in 1981). However, the band remarkably stayed together for the music, creating some of their most poignant and memorable songs during this difficult period, including Agnetha’s powerful rendition of “The Winner Takes It All,” which was written by Björn shortly after their divorce and served as a deeply symbolic “cleansing” experience for both.

Enduring Legacy and a Groundbreaking Return

ABBA officially broke up in 1982, believing their music would soon be forgotten. Yet, their songs found new life through the popular 1994 film Muriel’s Wedding and the highly successful 1999 stage musical ***Mamma Mia!***, which later became a blockbuster film and spurred a sequel. These projects introduced ABBA to new generations, keeping their legacy vibrantly alive.

In a surprising turn of events, the four members reunited in 2016 for the opening of a Mamma Mia! restaurant in Sweden, and in 2017, Frida and Agnetha even joined in song to surprise Benny and Björn. The biggest news for fans, however, arrived with the announcement of an ABBA digital tour set for early 2019. This groundbreaking show features a live band, dancers, and elaborate set designs, with the four members appearing as holograms or avatars, using recordings of their past performances. This collaboration marks the first time all four original members have worked together on a project since the band’s dissolution, generating immense excitement among their global fanbase.

The video concludes with Benny Anderson’s humble reflection on ABBA’s enduring impact, expressing profound gratitude for the lasting connection their music has forged with millions around the world.
